The long history and unique landscape of the New Forest has helped shape a singular and rich culture. This was our first visit to the Royal Oak at Fritham in the north of the New Forest and we were not disappointed. We walked past the nearby pretty Eyeworth Pond. A few yards further on and we were at the Royal Oak, which dates back to the 17th century. It was a lovely sunny day, but we decided to take full advantage of the old world atmosphere of this smallest of pubs, which was once known as the Parliament of the New Forest, and eat inside.

With the help of volunteers, we analysed historic maps dating back to to research around current rights of way, in 37 parishes. After selecting some of the oldest existing routes, around walking surveys were conducted to help develop trails and whittle down the contenders. Volunteers also researched historic documents to review what history could be found around these older rights of way. This work has led to these five new trail routes being suggested for their abundance of historic features and their connection to residential areas.
